I like the light in this photo! As far as your focus issue goes, I left an explanation of DOF for you on ILP. and in your case, focus on the eye closest to you, so your background blur is at its maximum. Since there's nothing in front of your subject, nothing will fall in your "unused" DOF (you will understand this once you read my answer on ILP :-) ).
